An ordinary school, yah absolutely correct. But this ordinary school is a place which give the primary education to many professional workers such as doctors, teachers, engineer and so on. Without education, we should not be able to achieve a 'life' as we had today.

The Corpse Flower

Rafflesia is a genus of flowering plants that is made up of of 16 known species. It was discovered in the Indonesian rain forest by an Indonesian guide working for Dr. Joseph Arnold in 1818, and named after Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles, the leader of the expedition.

In Sabah, the flower and host vine Tetrastigma are protected under the state's Wildlife Conservation Enactment of 1997. Rafflesia species are protected in a number of reserves within their range such as Kinabalu Park in Sabah on the island of Borneo. R. keithii, R. pricei and R. tengku-adlinii are found only in Sabah (Malaysian Borneo). Most flowers in the genus give off and smell of rotting flesh, hence its local name of “corpse flower.”

Take over a year to flower, the rarest and largest flowers can be seen at Poring (Kinabalu National Park) and the Rafflesia Centre (Crocker Range National Park). The plant has no stems, leaves or true roots. The only part of the plant that can be seen outside the host vine is the five-petaled flower. The flowers, which sit directly on the forest floor is an endoparasite of vines in the genus Tetrastigma (Vitaceae), spreading its root-like haustoria inside the tissue of the vine. This smell attracts flies, which pollinate the plant. The center of the flowers contain numerous spikes whose function are unknown, and it also holds several gallons of nectar. The fruit produced is round and about 15 cm in diameter, with thousands of tiny seeds.

Usage and potential
1. Food:
In Thailand, young buds of the flower are eaten as a delicacy.

2. Medicine:

In Peninsular Malaysia, Rafflesia buds are used by women to stop internal bleeding and shrink the womb after childbirth. Men use it as an energy drink or an aphrodisiac. Thai monks use the buds to make different concoctions for different purposes. In spite of its usage for various purposes, the chemical composition of Rafflesia flowers has not been extensively analysed yet. Preliminary phytochemical screening, however showed no evidence of the flowers' medicinal properties. On the contrary, the buds and flowers have a high content of tannin and phenols which can be toxic when taken in large quantities.

3. Other uses

In
Sabah, Malaysia, it was considered a flower of spirits or a taboo flower because of its foul smell and gigantic appearance. In Thailand, the flowers are believed to have mystical powers helping one attain nirvana.

The Bridges of Tamparuli

What can u best describe Tamparuli? I asked myself. Tamparuli is a small town and a sub-district of Tuaran in the west coast of Sabah. Tamparuli is located 42 km from Kota Kinabalu.

How many major bridges in Tamparuli? I asked myself again. Read through some articles, asking through some source and here is my conclusion. There are three major bridges. Yeaa..I have seen them. The oldest bridge is actually the low bridge that you can see below the new hanging bridge. It is built by the British colonies in early 1930s. It is one of concrete bridge that was able to survive even there is a big flood back in 1999. When you leave Tamparuli town, there will be two separate ways and on the left side is the way to Kiulu-Pukak and the right side is the way to Tuaran-Kota Kinabalu.
The second bridge is the new suspension bridge which built in early 1980s. You can see it if you are traveling to Kundasang from Tamparuli. This bridge is built after the low bridge is flooded The new suspension bridge is a solution to make vehicles and pedestrians' life easier. At that time Datuk Harris Salleh is the Chief Minister of Sabah. It is the second way for a vehicle to enter this small town apart from the low bridge.

The 3rd bridge is the new hanging bridge which quit near to the low concrete bridge. When you are leaving Tamparuli town, you will see the low bridge at the left side.

Back in 1970s, a Kadazandusun song is describing about a hanging bridge and a young girl who accidentally lost her shoe while crossing it. "Jambatan Tamparuli" by Justin Lusah well known by Malaysian especially Sabahan. So,which of this three major bridges is the real "Jambatan Tamparuli" that mention in the lyric of Justin Lusah's song? Sometimes people mistakenly the new hanging bridge as the bridge. But the real bridge is washed away by the hurricane flood in 1999. It still exist until the big flood damage it and until now the bridge is never been rebuilt.

p/s May be Tamparuli is a small town but it is full of stories hidden inside it. (^_^)V

This is the meaning of a flag to the people of Sabah;

  • The mountain on the flag symbolizes Mount Kinabalu, the well known and highest mountain in South East Asia in the State of Sabah, Malaysia Borneo
  • The three different shades of blue color on the flag of Sabah symbolize peace and tranquility, unity and prosperity and strength and co-operation.
  • The White colour symbolizes purity and justice.

This is the lyric of Sabahan State Anthem;

Negeri kita yang tercinta,
Pemuda-pemudi semua marilah,
Bangunlah bersatu semua.
